MCBA - the Club
Medina County Beekeepers Association is dedicated to education about and the preservation of the honeybee and honeybee products. Founded in 1951, the club has nearly 200 active members, both professional and hobbyist, primarily from Medina and Cuyahoga counties, Ohio. We generally meet on the third Monday of each month to share their knowledge and passion for the art of beekeeping. Check the calendar for exact dates and times.
The club welcomes new members of all ages and encourages new ideas to insure the preservation of the honeybee. Each summer, MCBA supports the Medina County Fair, hosting the 'bee booth' where people of all ages swarm to sample honey, honey products and to discover the importance and wonders of the honeybee.
Medina has a strong beekeeping heritage and holds special historical significance among beekeepers as the home of the A.I. Root Company. In 1869 an innovative beekeeper named Amos Ives Root, later known as "the father of modern day beekeeping," founded the A.I. Root company, specializing in honey, beeswax and beekeeping suplies. His standardized and affordable beehives and equipment revolutionized the industry. In 1928, the company turned its focus to the making of high quality candles. After five generations, the A.I. Root Company continues to be nationally recognized for their quality candles and related products. A.I. Root's spirit continues to grace the town of Medina. Although no longer selling beekeeping equipment, the name still stands as an icon in the industry of beekeeping. Many of Root's books & magazines continue to be published, including The ABC and XYZ of Bee Culture and Bee Culture magazine.
The company's dedication to beekeeping continues today, hosting the monthly meetings of the Medina County Beekeepers Association.
The club holds monthly meetings on the 3rd Monday of each month, at 7:00 pm in the training room of the A.I. Root company at 624 West Liberty (the building on the south side of the road). mapquest
