President's Corner

Welcome to Medina Beekeepers! The nice weather has things popping, including beekeepers’ enthusiasm. Bees are flying, there is brood in the hives, the newbees are making us smile, and there are a bunch of fun events on the schedule. Too many to list here, but they are all listed in the newsletter and on the website.

Don’t forget to visit the website for Growing Degree Days. Not really days, but a catchy title. The website is Type in your zip code and a number representing the growing degree “units” appears, along with the most prominent things blooming. It is an exceptional tool and if you happen to identify a significant nectar source near you, you can see exactly when it will bloom. If you click on Show Full Calendar you can scan the list to find the plants of interest to you.

I look forward to seeing you at the May meeting to be enlightened by Sheila St. Clair about creamed honey.

MCBA Special Event !!!

Come join us on Sunday, June 24th for a tour of Stan Hywet Hall, Gardens, and Butterfly exhibit. Times are 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Check the calendar for location and a link to register for the event. Hope to see you there!

It's almost Fair Time! !!!

This event generates much of the income that enables the club to bring in national speakers. We encourage all members to get involved. Sellers packets can be picked up at the regular June meeting. Fair booth cleanup and training will take the place of the July membership meeting and will include the Mandatory Seller's Meeting. If you plan on selling your hive products at the fair, you must attend this meeting. Fair Dates are July 30 - August 5, 2018. Questions should be addressed to Peggy Garnes.

USDA Honey bee Disease Diagnostic Services

USDA Honey Bee Disease Diagnostic Services, Beltsville MD is back up and running.

The USDA-ARS is extremely pleased to welcome Samuel Abban to the Bee Diagnostic Service.

Mr. Abban has ten years experience with honey bee disease diagnostics and research and he will ably run this program. Sam will board July 10, 2017 and with assistance from Bee Research laboratory staff will begin analyzing past and future samples submitted to the service. We will focus on brood samples as a means of addressing concerns over foulbrood disease and antibiotic prescriptions.

Please be patient as we dig through a substantial backlog of samples, but our aim is to strengthen the USDA Disease Diagnostic Service for another 100 years.

Finally, words can’t describe our thanks to the Bee Informed partnership for their support of Sam and bee diagnostics while we waited for an opportunity to bring Sam onboard with USDA.
