Come join Peggy Garnes and Paul Kosmos for a presentation and Q & A to help you make sure your bees are ready for winter.
 
Do they have enough food?  How much do they need?  How to check the food status.  There will be a discussion and demonstration
 
on how to prepare your hives for protection from the winter elements, including wrapping your hives, insulation, and winter feeding, among other topics.  In additition we will discuss some key points regarding varroa mite control at this point in the season.
 
There should be time for a Q & A session to address questions that are important to you.
 
 
Location:  Medina County Library, Community Room B, 210 South Broadway St.  This session is free, no charge.

6:30 Beekeepers Q & A

7:00 Speaker: Krispin Given, Apiculture Specialist at Purdue University, will be speaking on Selecting for Behavioral Resistance to Varroa Destructor

Dr. Greg Hunt and Krispin Given have been conducting research on selecting a strain of bees for behavioral resistance to varroa destructor, known as "ankle-biters" or "mite-biters". Given also maintains 120 research colonies and runs Purdue's honeybee breeding program.

We will also be running a Chili Cook Off and have door prizes at the meeting.

MCBA Meetings are open to the public. If you are not a member of the club, please consider making a donation at the door to help cover the cost of the speaker.

7:00 Speaker: Dr. Joe Latshaw

Joe Latshaw, Latshaw Apiaries, runs a premiere selective breeding program in the beekeeping industry. He focused on honeybees and and behavioral genetics while studying for his Ph.D. at Arizona State University. His research interests include nutrition, winter survivability, benefits of genetic diversity, queen rearing, insemination techniques and successful hive management to reduce the need for chemical treatments. 2018 MCBA Beginner Beekeeper Class

MCBA-sponsored event

The class will cover basic honey bee biology, getting started with honey bees, all the equipment you will need, fundamental management skills, harvesting your crop and preparing for winter. Students will be advised on kinds of equipment to purchase, where to get bees and how to handle problems.

The class dates and the specific syllabus for each day has not yet been confirmed but we typically cover 15 hours of classroom instruction plus field days at the Club’s apiary.
